This is the children's introduction to tennis intelligence. They learn to look at the ball, their own position and their opponent before deciding what to do.
Key question:
What should I do next?
Core framework:
Look → Think → Choose → Play
Where to stand on the court
Where their opponent is
Where the space is
How to recognise an easy or difficult ball
When to hit safely and when to attack
Why the same shot is not always the best choice
How to recover after hitting
How to think one shot ahead
Children are given little tactical problems to solve:
Where is the space?
Where is your opponent?
Where could you send the ball?
What do you think will happen next?
Our Motto: Don't just chase the ball. Look, think and choose.
09:00–09:10 | Welcome & Tennis Detective Introduction
Introduce the workshop as a challenge to become a “Tennis Detective”.
Good players don't just watch the ball — they look for clues.
3 simple clues:
Where am I?
Where is my opponent?
Where is the space?
Demonstrate two contrasting points: hitting without looking versus looking and choosing.
09:15–10:00 | Game 1: Look — See the Court
LOOK
Children play simple cooperative and competitive games where they must identify:
their own position
their opponent's position
open space
where the ball is coming from
Activities:
Find the Space: coach calls “left”, “right”, “short” or “deep”, and children identify the available space.
Where Is the Opponent? players must call out where their opponent is before hitting.
Freeze the Point: stop play and ask children to point towards the best available space.
Coach question: “What can you see?”
10:00–10:40 | Game 2: Think & Choose
THINK → CHOOSE
Children learn that different balls create different choices.
Explore:
easy ball vs difficult ball
short ball vs deep ball
ball to the side vs ball to the middle
attacking opportunity vs defensive situation
Activities:
Traffic Light Tennis
Green = attack
Yellow = build
Red = defend
Choose Your Target: children decide between two or three targets depending on the incoming ball.
Coach's Challenge: coach feeds different balls and children have to choose the appropriate response.
The emphasis is not on finding one “correct” answer, but on explaining:
Coach question: “Why did you choose that?”
10:45–11:25 | Game 3: Play the Point
LOOK → THINK → CHOOSE → PLAY
Children play short points with simple tactical challenges.
Examples:
score an extra point for finding open space
score an extra point for moving the opponent
score an extra point for choosing the right moment to attack
win a bonus point if the player can explain their decision afterwards
Introduce “Tennis Detective Points”:
What did you see?
What did you choose?
Why?
What happened?
11:30–12:30 | Tennis Detective Challenge
Children work through a series of mini challenges:
Challenge 1: Find the space
Challenge 2: Move the opponent
Challenge 3: Choose attack or defend
Challenge 4: Think one shot ahead
Challenge 5: Explain your decision
The coach rewards smart decisions.
Group discussion:
What does a Tennis Detective look for?
When should you attack?
Where is the space?
What makes a good decision?
